Health & Medical Research

AKKAOA’s Health & Medical Research Committee is committed to fostering research projects and other clinical activities in pursuit of information that will enable the Alaskan Klee Kai owner to provide the best possible health care for their dog.  However, in order for relevant clinical information to be available to all, we need everyone to participate in the research activities.  If only a few people participate by willingly sharing information on their dog, the value of the information is much less than it is when there is full participation.  It takes all of us to share information on our dogs.  That is the only way we can have a true picture of what is happening within this breed.  Only with your help will we be able to provide you with data that you can share with your veterinarian who can then better provide for the health needs of your Alaskan Klee Kai.

Watch here for future updates on current projects, which include the Health Survey, and the Factor VII Deficiency DNA testing program.

Remember, when taking your dog to the Veterinarian to have blood work done, please make sure that the dog:

  • Has been fasting for 8 hours
  • Is on no antibiotics or if on antibiotics, the veterinarian is aware and notes on report form
  • Is well, not ill, best to draw blood during a health check-up or ‘well visit’ to the veterinary clinic
  • If male, has not been around females in heat

Health Information will be is being entered anonymously into the database that tracks the health status of Alaskan Klee Kai.  Be part of the solution, and participate by forwarding actual copies of reports for the files, not just e-mail reports.  For the data to be valid, it must be verifiable by having a source document that generates the information.  Individuals have expressed an interest in learning their own unique identifier, so that when data are published, if codes are used, they can find their own dogs.  Those identifier codes will be forwarded to each person, eventually.  But we need to get the data and into a format that is easily readable by everyone.  We are working on that.  Factor VII has taken all of the energy right now, but you will be notified.

Be part of the solution, send your data to Lo Binkley, 77 W Avenida de Las Flores, Thousand Oaks, CA  91360
